A Pidyon Nefesh — literally “redemption of the soul” — is an ancient practice in which one gives tzedakah on behalf of a person in need of mercy, and a tzaddik prays over that name.

The tzedakah acts as a redemption, sweetening harsh decrees, while the tzaddik's prayer opens gates that our own words may not reach. It is given for healing, for a shidduch, for children, for livelihood, for protection, or at any moment of need.
